- Charles Bianconi an Italian came to Ireland when he was a young boy and landed in Dublin. All he possessed was six small statues for sale and four pence in his pocket. He sold the statues at a small profit and bought more and carried on in this way for some months. He lived on a bun and a glass of beer in the day and this was his only food. He paid three pence per night for his bed in a model lodge. He then started through the country. When he had a few pounds saved he wandered in to Galway and hawked statues in a basket. He was walking one day to the fair of Ballinasloe when a shaft car with driver and three passengers drew up with him. He asked the driver what would he charge him to bring him to the town and the(continues on next page)
