- (continued from previous page)there was that the Catholics would not be permitted to build a church. Then a chapel was built. It was called Golan chapel.There was Mass said, at Legnahoney. The priest used a stone, and then he was surrounded by the people. Some people think that Mass was said in a hollow. in Stewarts Hill. A stone is to be seen where the priest celebrated Mass and above it the people knelt.
- In a place near Letterkenny, known as Sentry Hill mass was said during penal times. This place took its name from the fact that a sentry was placed there as a protection for the priest while saying mass. The mass rock is still to be seen. A quarry has been worked round it in later years which has made it more visible.

- In the district of Churchill there is a rock on which Mass was celebrated in the Penal Days. This rock is situated on the side of Churchill. On this rock there is still to be seen the traces of a crucific cut into the rock. and the hollows in which the blessed candles were placed when Mass was being said.A few years ago, while men were cutting turf in Fahykeen(continues on next page)
