- Long ago the children of this locality used to go barefooted in Summer. They never wore shoes until they were fit to go to England. Some of them wore clogs, others slippers and others créichins with only soles and straps keeping them on.The local shoemakers were James Flynn of Ireland, Pay Gilmore of Kilnalag and Pat Smyth, Carratoe.Mrs. Reynolds of Meelick never wore a shoe unless she was going to town. She goes barefooted both Winter and Summer. Mrs Cooney of Croaghill does, also.
