Local Marriage Customs1. In this locality marriages most frequently take place before Shrove and before Advent. The first Sunday in Lent is still known to old people here as "Pus Sunday," or "Chalk Sunday," because it was believed long ago that marriageable people whose matches were not finished before Shrove wore a "pus" on this Sunday.June and April are thought to be lucky months for marriages, while March and May are reckoned unlucky. Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays are believed to be lucky days."Monday for health, Tuesday for wealth, Wednesday the best of all. Thursday for losses. Friday for crosses, Saturday no good at all."People like to have a good sunny day for their marriage. an old rhyme still remembered in this district says.
