    It was on Shrove Tuesday evening

    It was on Shrove Tuesday evening,
    Those words they said to me,
    "I think we'll take a trip to-night,
    The Skelligs for to see.
    Sure I was never there before,
    I'll steal away and see
    And join the boat that bears afloat
    Each buachaill and cailín.
    I took my stick and started off
    When twilight stole away,
    And towards Minard Castle harbour
    I then did find my way.
    A mist of rain o'er hill and plain
    Hung dark and cold and drear;
    And many an empty bottle
    Was sounding far and near.
    At Ballinasare I overtook
    My dear old friend Castel,
    And with him was Mick Packey,
    And young Mat Flynn as well.
    I courteously saluted them,
    And joined their company,
    Twas then I found that they were
