  1. Long ago shops were not as common as they are now adays. In those days the (the) shops were situated about nine miles apart. Every Saturday people went in carts drawn by asses to "the shop" to buy goods to last them for a week. The rich people payed "money down" for their goods. That means they paid for their goods at once. The poor people got their goods on "tick" that means they did not pay for them for a certain lengt of time. Some people paid for their goods by labour.
