Long ago in Ireland before there was any soap or starch. The people brought their clothes to the brink of a river and washed them with a beetle and clay. When they had them washed, they spread them on the grass to dry.
Then the rubbed a boiled potato on the collar and cuffs instead of starch. After that they ironed them.- Informant
