  1. About fifty years ago a famous athlete named Thomas Chambers lived at Cashelane, Dunbeacon, about six miles north of Ballydehob. He was famed for his swiftness and endurance in running, and gave proof of his prowess on many occasions.
    Once he raced a coach owned by Lord Bantry from Bantry to Cork, a distance of over sixty miles, and arrived there long before it.
    He was also a well-known horse-trainer and rider, and his neighbours always employed him when they wanted to train their horses. He could jump on to the back of a galloping horse with ease.
    In the same townland there lives another man who is famous for his strength. He is named Patrick Lucey. Once he wanted to harrow a field, and as he possessed no harrow himself, he went to a friends farm to borrow one. He then took it two miles on his shoulder
