  1. There was a man named O'Brien living at Bally-Mac-Quirke Bridge who was a tailor. HIs wife was going to Banteer for messages and he told her to bring him tobacco. When she returned home he asked her if she had brought him the tobacco and she said no that she forgot it. He said that he would go for it himself and she did all she could to prevent him. She was afraid that he would be killed and away he went in spite of her. He was walking along until he came to Ballymacquirke bridge. This bridge is a mile from Banteer in the County Cork. There was a spirit sitting on top of this bridge and she smoking a pipe. When this man was passing her he said to her "for God's sake mam" give me a smoke of that pipe "I will" said she and welcome "sit down there and smoke enough When he had enough smoked she said, "go home now and come again tomorrow night". He worked all day next day at his trade tailoring and when the night came he went towards the spirit again and she was sitting on top of the bridge and she smoking her pipe. He
