- Potatoes are generally sown in a field where Barley grew the previous year. In the Winter the farmer spreads manure on the field and ploughs it in. He then leaves the field that way until Spring. Then he harrows and rolls the field until the clay is fine enough to make drills. He makes the drills about twenty six inches apart. The potatoes are then planted in the furrows. Some farmers spread the manure in the furrows and plant the potatoes on top of it.
The names of some potatoes are Kerspink, Beauties, Arran banners, Main crop, British Queens, Arran pilots, Arran Victors, Epicures, Champions, Up-to-dates, Flanders, Presidents, Golden wanderers,
