“In two places in this parish there is what is called locally a "Money Hole".”
In two places in this parish there is what is called locally a "Money Hole". One place is situated near the moate of Ballingown two miles north west from Blackwater. Local béaloideas has it that long ago people buried their money there and that soldiers were buried with the money. It is curious the fact of a soldier being buried with the treasure is mentioned by the old people of the locality.
The other is at Knocknasillogue "Cnoc na Sailleog" in a field owned at present by one Thomas Quinn. His grand father searched for the treasure and found the flag which shrouded the dead soldiers. He desisted and covered up the hole but planted a sgeach.
The sgeach is there still.- Informant
