  1. The great Irish famine occured in the years 1846 and 1847.
    It was caused by the blight which destroyed the potatoe crop.
    People were dependant on the potatoe for their food and when it failed they scarcely anything to support them.
    So great was the famine want of food that in some parts of Ireland people had to eat grass, every thing such as cattle, sheep, and poultry were killed.
