In Turlough (four or five miles north of Castlebar) there is a pit with a stand of gold in it. Fitzgerald of Turlough got divers from England to go down to see where it was. They hooked chairs to the gold and they had horses chained to the gold to pull it up. And the horses pulled the gold to the surface and just as the gold was at the top of the water the chains cut, and it fell down again. Fitzgerald wanted the divers to go down again but they would not go down again for all they ever seen, and it's there yet.
