  1. Most of the houses of long ago were built of stone and mortar. The roof was thatched with either straw or rushes and sometimes heather. They used the straw of the flax that they grew in the fields. They got the heather from Gollan hill. The old houses all had beds in the kitchen. It was placed beside the fire. It was called a settle-bed or an out-shot. The fireplace was always against the gable wall. Nearly all the fronts of the chimneys were made of stones and morter but a few were
