- I live in a townland called Greenane, which is situated about a mile and a half north east of this school. It gets its name from a castle built on a hill on our farm long ago. To the front of this castle was a big room set apart for the ladies, called a "Grianán" and hence Greenane.
There are special names on some of the fields. Opposite the dwelling-house is a field called the "Church-field" It got its name from an old church nearby; Another field is called "Páirc na Salach". It is so named because of a pile of clay that is in the middle of the field.
A Rock on our farm is called "Ruane's Rock". According to tradition it got its name because of a king "Ruadhán Ruad" who lived in the castle on our hill. He was accustomed to come to that rock on a sunny day and sit there. It is since known as "Ruane's Rock".(continues on next page)- Collector
