    When the giant had wholloped the balk of timber three times thinking of course it was Jack he went away quite satisfied with himself.
    The next morning Jack came down to breakfast the very same as if nothing had happened. The giant was surprised you may be sure when he saw Jack alive and well, and he looked at Jack for a long time. Says Jack to him "you seem surprised to see me", "I'm not surprised", says the giant, "but I thought something happened you last night, did you sleep well?", "I did" says Jack "but a rat ran over me bed in the middle of the night and gave me a few swipes of his tail". The giant was greatly surprised when he heard this. So they sat down to breakfast. The giant had
