The garden spade is factory made and with the exception of the handle it is made of iron.
    Drills.
Potatoes are sown in drills in soil in which oats or some grain crop has been grown the previous year.
This soil is called “stubbles”. It is first ploughed. Then it is harrowed with a spring tooth harrow which is locally called “a grubber”. When the clay is broken up and made fine with the grubber the drills are made. These are usually opened with a double chell plough which is drawn by two horses.
Stable manure is then spread in the drills. Sometimes bag manure is shaken over it. The slits are then spread in single lines over the manure. They are left about one foot apart.
