- Long ago the old people had no clocks. The way they used to know the time of day was, when their shadow was behind them it was late, and when their shadow was by their side it was early, and when their shadow was in a certain place in the house it was the dinner-hour.They used to say when anybody came in to the house, and the people of the house were churning it was not right to go out without taking a while of the dash, or the fairies would take the butter and unless by means of a piece of iron it could not be restored again.(continues on next page)
