- The oldest man in our Parish at present is John Egan Fairhill Belcarra Castlebar. He is 96. He is not a native of the parish he was born in Athlone, and worked from some time in the railway. I have heard it said that John Egan was the first man to bring a football to Mayo. He brought it from Roscommon. Before that time hurling was the game played in this, as indeed in most districts of Ireland. However in this parish there seems to be no traditions of great hurling matches nor of throwing the cast either the shoulder stone or the winding stone. Owing to the absence of deep pools in the river it may be hardly any of the old people and only few of the younger people can swim.There is never a mention even by the very oldest of Poteen having been made in our districts, situated as they are they law couldn't easily(continues on next page)
