Long ago the people had not any schools to go to as the people have now.
A young man named John Duggan started a hedge-school in Ballyglass and people came from all around the place to learn. Irish, Latin, and French were the subjects taught. They used bring sods of turf with them to sit on. With slate pencils they used write and it was on their knees they used leave the slates.
Often they had their slates tied around their necks, and for every word of Irish spoken there was a mark put on the slate. Then at the end of every month they sued be scourged with the cat-o-nine tales.(continues on next page)- Collector
