    His listener laughed heartily as they all knew he spoke of "flummery" which was a good wholesome dish in these parts in byegone times.
    Flummery was got from the shells of oat see. These were obtained at the local mills. They were first steeped till they got sour. They were then boiled taking care to keep stirring the contents of the pot till it got quite thick. This food was quite common in this district during the famine times.
