- In most districts in this country feasts are observed in a special manner as they occur each year. St. Patrick's Eve, which is locally called "the pattern", is a big fair day in Ballyhaunis. Crowds of people from the outlying districts especially the children, are to be seen in town on that day.
Fortune-tellers and other trick-of-the-loops have camped beforehand on the fair green. People gather in from three to five o'clock and the streets are crowded from that until night.
On account of its being a fair day the boys have an extra amount of money to spend and it is locally said that they "drown the shamrock" on that day as they spend much time around the bars. There are also many means of enjoyment for(continues on next page)- Collector
