- The animals that are common around the farm are cows calves, sheep, lambs, horses, goats and pigs. The majority of the cows has got names. A red and white is a strawberry. A black and white cow is called a mag-pie. A cow without horns is called a polly. The words used when driving cows are
"How How."
The house in which the cows are kept at night is called byre. There is place for two cows and two calves. There is a little window in the gable of it. The cows are tied with chains which are fastened to stakes.
The chains are home made. The usual methods of tying cows are around the neck and by the horns. St. Bridget's cross is often hung in the byre or a horse shoe to bring luck on the stock. There are no stories told about(continues on next page)- Collector
