- Long ago forts were more numerous than what they are now. The people made more use of them in that time but now they think nothing about them. There was not a townland in the country that had not three or four forts. There is an old fort a few hundred yards away from my house. Long ago it was of was of more use to the country than what it is now. Forts were beautiful long ago and well guarded also. The old people can tell the young ones alot about the forts. A fort is a raised piece of ground with very low land sorrounding it. Some of the forts have trees growing on them but the one I am describing has no tree on it. It is situated in the centre of Thomas Kearnes's field beside the main road. Long ago when Ireland was in trouble some soldiers came there and built up that fort(continues on next page)
