- There are a great many forts in this district. They are called "Liss" except one in Belisker. It is said that it was the Danes that built them. They are all in sight of each other. Every morning they used to light a fire on them if all was well. If anything was wrong they throw grass on the fire to make smoke. Then their neighbours went to their assistance.

- There is a fort in Cloonlara, Brickens, Claremorris. It is a round place and there are trees growing round it. A light was seen in it last Summer. Mrs. Costello that saw it. It was going up and down for about ten minutes and then it disappeared like a flash of lightning. One day grandfather was ploughing on the fort and when he was just beginning when he was driven about 100 yards out of the fort. He thought that himself and the horses were thrown out of the fort.
