A Story
“Once upon a time there lived in the village of Cross-beg a poor widow and her only son.”
Once upon a time there lived in the village of Cross-beg a poor widow and her only son. They had an old cow to sell and the lad set out for the fair of Kilkelly with the cow. When he came to Raith castle a small man came out from inside the fence and offered him a stick for the cow. The stick would beat anything you would tell it. The lad went home and immediately the stick bata-buidhe after the cow and it brought her home. The next fair day he set out again and the same man came out and offered him a tablecloth for the cow. The tablecloth when spread on a table would supply any food you wished. As soon as he came home he invited all the neighbors to a(continues on next page)- Collector
