    Books were very scarce at this time, and sometimes one book had to do the whole school. The scholars used to write on flage, and stones with chalk, but sometimes they wrote on pieces of paper with quil pens, made from the berries of the bowl-tree.
    When the National Schools were introduced the hedge-schools vanished.
