- (continued from previous page)middle of the roof and the fire in the middle of the floor. The smoke used not go out very well in those smoke holes and it used to go out in holes in the roof. The seats they had were to dig blocks of wood and place them round the fire to sit on. They had no cement floors but made of daub and stones. The candles they used were rushes dipped in a little tin candlestick. There was a bed in each house and it was usually left flat on the ground.
