  2. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and there is Ashes put on the people's foreheads. A grain of salt is thrown on each boy and girl during shrove to preserve them for another year.

  3. The girls who did not get married during shrove were supposed to have a "smut" or cross looking face on them, and that is why it is "called "smut" Sunday. A fist of salt was thrown on those girls to preserve them for another year
