    The Penal laws were being enacted in Ireland from 1695 to 1829 a period of about 134 years. During that time catholics were forbidden to send their children to catholic schools or to have catholic teachers give instruction in their homes.
    Now the faith stood in great danger but well educated men were known to risk their life in its defence. They set up schools here and there called hedge schools. They taught in the open air when it was suitable and in barns in Winter. Boys were appointed to watch in case the soldiers should surprise them. They never neglected their duty and so with the combined efforts of teacher and children the faith never died.
