- When I was a boy potatoes and Indian meal stirabout were the principal food of the people. The stirabout was eaten cold with buttermilk when it was to be had.Coffee was sometimes used and was sold in penny boxes.The potatoes, when boiled, were emptied on to a large flat basket and the family sat round, peeling them with their fingers.If they had a salty herring hanging from the rafters it was cooked in this way.A few red coals were placed on the hearth and the tongs was stretched over them.
