Poteen "Sprees" were frequent in the glen and men and women drank themselves into insensibility.
People used to come from all parts of Mayo and Sligo to have stills made by Joe.
Now and again Joe would place a still in a place where the police would be able to find it and so get the reward for discovering a still.
In this way he kept himself in their good graces and so was never summoned.
When he died everyone was sorry for he was a very generous man.
