- There were many shipwrecks long ago of which our people have knowledge. The River Dee was wrecked on the 1st of January 1872 at a place called bearna bán in the west. She was sailing with a cargo of timber.
The Helen was wrecked in Pulgloss at a place now known as Carraig na bháid. She was coming from Liverpool with a cargo of oranges.
The Jane Black was wrecked at a place now known as Carraig na Mairnáslach in Clare Island. She was also travelling with a cargo of timber. There was another ship wrecked at Clare Island with a cargo of herrings.
The Maisy was wrecked at Cross on the 24th of June 1900 with a cargo of provisions. She was going from Westport to Baffin. There were three persons drowned off it. There was a pleasure boat wrecked in Bunown near Louisburgh. They were people from Bunown that were drowned. The place is now known as the maids of Bunown. The O Malleys from Clare Island and a Mc Hale man from Emlagh were drowned whilst going(continues on next page)- Collector
