- The old people say that the houses long ago were more comfortable than they are now. They say that they had good chimneys and cosy hearth fires of strick and turf.Most of the families always had two rooms and a kitchen in their houses and two doors on the kitchen. The doors were on the opposite sidewall and opposite one another.They had clay floors in their houses which they always kept covered with sand and well cleaned.The walls were rough on account of white-washing they did with a "beesom" of heath from the(continues on next page)
