- (continued from previous page)bog and sometimes they would splash the lime-wash on the clay floors with the "beesom".The old couple always slept in the bed in the kitchen and when the house was being built there was a "pootch" left to the north side of the house for the bed.The houses were thatched with rushes or sedge which was got on the marsh.Candles they used as light in the old houses made by themselves out of rushes.First they would peel the rushes and soak them in lard or grease which they had for the purpose. Then they would leave the peeled rushes to harden and they used those as candles.
