    it. The Excise officers were taken prisoners by the French. Horsemen were sent to see why the excise officers were not returning - they said they saw the French landing and dividing arms on the Irish.
    Another messenger said they were coming towards Palmerstown. The Commander was riding on a gig. He shouted "Counter march" Some went through the Demesne "Castlerea" and others went the main road through Mullagh Horn to Killala.
    The Protestants guarded themselves in the Protestant Bishop's Castle. (This was afterwards the Workhouse.) The French fought one hour in Killala. The gates were closed and were blown in with a cannon.
    There was an Irishman named Duffy of Rathfran with the French. His father was hung by Hall Smyth. He had his head out a window and Duffy killed him.
