- (continued from previous page)My aunt Mrs Forde, Tooreen, Carrowmore, Ballina, has a reel at home. It is a hundred years old. It was used for putting on thread before it would go to the weaver. When the people would be getting sheeting or drugget petticoats, they would put the thread on the reel.
The reel would be going around with your finger until it would be going around 100 times, and before it would be the 100, it would get stiff, and then when it would be 100 it would make a crack.
Then that would make a cut at a hank and that is the way they used to know all the cuts they wanted.
The reel is made of timber, and the body of it is round where the crack is. It has three feet under it, for to stand on the ground. There are twelve pieces of wood coming out of the body, and they are getting wider as they come out, and there is a piece of wood on the top of what is coming out.
