- On the first day of May, the old people took their churns and basins of milk to a field where a river was. Then they washed the churn with the water of the river, before they would put the milk in the churn.
When they were ready to churn, they made the sign of the cross on the milk. Then the churning was done beside the river.
The old people believed that if they would not do this, the fairies would take the butter off the milk for the year.
