- Marriages generally took place in Spring and Autumn. These two seasons were chosen because the farmers wanted extra help to do the work.
Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday were considered lucky days for marriage. While Friday and Monday were unlucky for that reason it is thought that marriages never took place on those days.
Matches were made always and the dowry consisted of stock or goods only in the very early times. In more recent times, some money perhaps twenty pounds and a cow was considered a big dowry.
The wedding-day was a holiday not alone for the family in which the wedding took place but also for the relatives and neighbours. If the parties to get married lived near the church (a mile would be considered near) the whole party would march in a procession, two deep to the church. They would march home likewise.
