There is an old saying that anyone who enters the house while churning is going on has to help with the work lest he should take the butter away with him. He must say on entering "God bless the work" if the churning is taking place.
Sometimes a burned cinder is put under the churn before the work is started to prevent the fairies from taking the butter.
A farmer often wanted a lighting coal in the garden if he came to fetch it while the churning was going on he should not take the coal unless he put a sod of turf on the fire otherwise he would take away the butter.- Collector
