- Long ago straw rhy and rushes were used to thatch the houses. The rushes were obtained in the nearest bog. The straw was twisted in ropes and these were tied in the form of a cross on the roof of the house. The ends of the ropes were tied to wooden pegs in the walls.
This method of thatching was done once every two years and that was in the harvest when straw was plentiful.- Collector
