  2. At the last Sunday of shrove all eligible men and girls who did not get settles down during shrove it was an old custom to chalk them. About 30 years ago they used to put up a turnip and carve out a face. Some people used wait up all night watching the chalkers.
    For men the chalkers used to tar a woman's head on a pier of their gate and the initials of the person it is intended for on the other pier.
