Long ago there was a coopers shop in Clonea. The trade was carried on by John and William Shanahan. They made firkins, which the farmers bought to put the buter in,when they were taking it to market.
The firkins cost five shillings each.
When the creameries started the farmers brought their milk to the creamery , the butter was made there, and put in boxes then the coopers were done out of their trade. - Local Industries
There was once a coopering business in Clonea. The mans name was John Shanahan. He made wooden milk cans and butter ferkins. The farmers bought them from him, and they used them for bringing their butter to the market. They got the sallies for the ferkins in a place called “The Sally Island”.
When the creameries began all this work was done away with.
The sallies were got under the bridge of Fid-down. They were seasoned for years(continues on next page)- Collector
