- In olden times our ancestors used different kinds of bread. They made hard oaten-meal griddle-bread (from) made from water and their home grown oaten meal. And this kind of bread must be good for our ancestors because they lived a long time.The bread we use to day is of a different kind such as soda cake loaf bread, wheaten bread, and potato squares. Long ago they ground there own meal with a little quern and they are still to be seen in St Kevin's kitchen Glendalough.To day I will describe soda-cake leven bread and potatoe squares.
