    Mathew was expected to give the pledge, This was to be in the yard adjacent to the church for whenever possible, the ceremony of administering the pledge was given in the open air rather than in a chapel because the "feeling of none should be interfered with". They heard a voice call out "kneel down" Every one knelt, again the voice was heard, now giving the words of the pledge against intoxicating drink. They were repeated in an echo of fervour and sincerity. As the pledge "batch" came out a fresh one passed in, and circled round the yard. On Sunday
