    that he was invited there and he intended to remain. He remained there till the following day without food or drink. Connolly sent for a minister who came and prayed over him but the stranger would not leave. Higher authorities of the Protestant Church came but the stranger still remained. Against his will Connolly sent for a priest who came, but could not remove the devil. Another priest came and went away with the same result. Finally a young priest came from Celbridge, he prayed for a long time over the stranger. Then he ordered him saying "Go down through that heartstone [sic]to hell where you came from". The black marble hearthstone opened in two and the devil went down through it. On going down he stared into the mirror and it cracked across. The cracks are still to be seen.
    I got this information from my mother who has been in Connolly's house and has seen the cracks. There is a book written about this story and it is titled, "Hunting with the Kildare Hounds".
