- Drimnagh Castle is one of the most interesting feudal relics in the County of Dublin. This ancient fortress, at one time protected by a fosse, was an advance fortification of the City of the Pale. It was built about 1214 by Sir Hugh de Barnewell, on a grant of lands for the purpose from King John and remained in the possession of the Barnewell family for over 400 years. In the early 17th century, as a result of litigation, the castle passed into the hands of Sir Adam Loftus, one of the founders(continues on next page)
