Before the English occupation, the church of Kilbarron, which stands in the townland of that name at the roadside which runs from Ballyshannon to Coolmore, was frequented by the people of the Parish to hear Holy Mass.
In "dark and evil days" in Ireland and in Ballyshannon district as elsewhere, priests were confined to hiding places where, when opportunity offered, they left to say Mass in some of the houses of the people.
Soldiers and yeomen over ran our country in the Penal days and were always on the look out for the priests and the schoolmasters, and it's a well known fact that several priests were hanged at a spot convenient to Cashelard Chapel which, till the present day refuses to grow grass.
When some measure of freedom was accorded to the Bishops and Priests of Ireland, a few houses in each district were selected for(continues on next page)- Collector
