- (continued from previous page)were such things as Shebeen houses in the country. There happened to be one by the wayside and Bill feeling thirsty wanted a drink but having no money he asked the devil to turn himself into a piece of money which he did. As soon as the blacksmith had him turned into money, he put it in his purse and returned to his anvil where he began beating it with his hammer. Seeing this the devil said that if he let him out of the purse he would promise never to call for him again. In the course of a short time Bill died and called at the gates of Heaven. St. Peter asked “who was there” and on hearing the reply he sent him to Hell. On his arrival at Hell he was asked “who was there” and when the devil heard it was Bill Cooper he said that he got enough torture from him on earth and he lit a wisp and gave it to Bill and from that day to this “Bill the wisp” wander through the world and that is the end of my story.
