    oil and in cows’ fat which was put in a vessel called a “cam”. When the rush lights were made they were put in a piece of iron sticking up out of a piece of wood and there was a clip on the iron like pinchers and it held the rush light.
    The people also used a jam pot full of oil and a strip of cloth in it for a light. People did not know anything about making candles except the rush candles.
